Electronic Services, Journals and Books

KoBSON

The Serbian Library Consortium for Coordinated Acquisition (KoBSON) is a new form of library organization in Serbia. The initiative for establishment of the Consortium came from leading scientific libraries in Serbia 2001. The main goals of the Consortium are optimized procurement of foreign scientific information, transfer from paper to electronic edition, enhancement of electronic information access, and promotion of national scientific publishing. KoBSON portal is available free of charge and without authentication to everybody from the academic IP domain in Serbia. Here is a link to the instructions on how to configure your browser.

Since 2004, remote access ("from home", over commercial Internet provider) is also available to users. For remote access it is necessary to obtain a licence granting adherence to the terms of use. The rights to remote access are granted to everybody permanently employed at academic and scientific institutions founded by the Republic of Serbia, as well as students with scholarships endowed by the Ministry of Science. The licence for remote access is free of charge. Researchers employed at the Institute for Biological Research "Siniša Stanković" have to complete and sign the licence and submit it to the Institute's librarian who will forward the request. The account for remote access will be created the same day, the user receives an e-mail containing data for logging in and short instruction on how to use the service.

Scopus

Scopus is a bibliographic database containing abstracts and citations of scientific work published in reviewed journals, books and on conference proceedings. Containing more than 57 million records, Scopus covers more than 21,000 titles from over 5,000 publishers in the field of medicine, chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, technical and social sciences. It is owned by Elsevier and it is available online by subscription. The academic network of Serbia has access to Scopus database through KoBSON. Scopus analyzes an author's output, provides the author with citation overview of the article (since 1996), gives options to exclude self-citation, and counts the author's h-index.

Researchers employed at the Institute for Biological Research "Siniša Stanković" can access Scopus on KoBSON's link where a researcher defines the model of access, from the academic network or remote access.

Web of Science (WoS)

WoS is a scientific citation indexing service maintained by Thomson Reuters, who pioneered citation indexing and analysis. Covering over 50,000 scholar books, 12,000 journals and 160,000 conference proceedings, WoS provides access to multiple databases that reference cross-disciplinary research. It provides a list of the 250 most cited authors from more than 21 scientific fields in the last 20 years of the 20th century.

All databases included in the Web of Science are selective – they cover 10 - 12 % of the existing scientific journals. Its coverage is better in natural and technical sciences.

The academic network of Serbia has access to the following contents of WoS through KoBSON:

three citation indexes – covering the period from 1996,

two sections of conference proceedings – covering the period from 2001,

two sections of Journal Citation Reports (JCR) – covering the period from 2006.

SCIndex

SCIndeks is a bibliographic database, the Serbian citation index, developed to serve as a supplement to the international (Thomson-ISI) citation indexes. SCInedx indexes national journals categorized as periodical scientific publications. All these journals are indexed systematically from "cover to cover". This database provides short descriptions of the journals, article's' abstract and all citation references (metadata). Articles which are published in journals reaching a higher quality and which have accepted the principle of Open Access are represented in full text. SCIndex is available for all internet users free of charge.

Lectures and workshops for researchers

The Librarians' Section of the Serbian Association of Institutes organizes a series of lectures and workshops for researchers. In selecting the subjects for this programme we are guided by our personal experience in working with researchers at the Institutes in which we work. Depending on researchers' interest, we plan to include new subjects. We encourage researchers to send us their suggestions at This email address is being protected from spambots. Lecturers are librarians, regular and associated members of the Librarians' Section of the Serbian Association of Institutes. Lectures and workshops are organized in the premises of the host institute. The lecture/workshop can be scheduled by contacting the lecturer directly or by contacting the librarian of the host institute.

All the lectures/workshops are free of charge and can be organized in the same institute more than once, if necessary. The organizer needs to provide space, a computer with internet connection and a projector. Also, the organizer needs to send an official invitation letter addressed to the lecturer. With aim to improve the services of the IBISS Library, a survey was carried out with the title Reference Manager Systems. The purpose of this survey was to find out how researchers organize bibliographic references as part of their scientific work; whether they use any application for this and whether they need or want to learn about new applications and their performances. The response to the survey was significant, 20% of researchers at the Institute completed the questionnaire.
