PANDA - about us

Pan-Balkan Alliance of Natural Products and Drug Discovery Associations (PANDA)

Being inspired by the Belt and Road Initiative, during the 2nd Balkans-China Mini-symposium on Natural Products and Drug Discovery, held on 11-13 April 2019 in Belgrade, Serbia, with the already existing cooperation, the Institute for Biological Research "Siniša Stanković"—National Institute of Republic of Serbia (IBISS), University of Belgrade and the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM), Chinese Academy of Sciences initiated the establishment of the Pan-Balkan Alliance of Natural Products and Drug Discovery Associations (PANDA).

To promote the mutual development and benefit, PANDA was formally established at the “Belt and Road” International Symposium of Science and Technology Innovation on September 26th 2019 in Shanghai, China. Today alliance counts various members from the People's Republic of China and from 13 European countries. We established two PANDA Secretariats with bases in Shanghai (opened 2019) and Belgrade (opened 2020).

We represent a non-governmental, non-profit, open, international scientific alliance, with the goal to promote:

  • Various academic exchange activities among the members of the alliance;
  • The mutual development of natural products, drug discovery based on natural resources in these countries, and food safety;
  • Cooperative talents nurturing programs among various organizations within the alliance;
  • The capability of innovation in science and technology through joint applications for research funding.

The citizen science project Obtectus Finders

This year the Center for the Promotion of the Science of the Republic of Serbia and the Program "Start Up For Science" have supported the citizen science project Obtectus Finders. The main goal of the Obtectus Finders is to analyze the genetic variability of natural populations of seed beetles, which go by the scientific name Acanthoscelides obtectus. To accomplish this aim we want to partner with the public in order to collect beetles from a large number of different locations. The involvement of volunteers in collecting beetles will help us uncover the distribution of this pest insect at broad geographic scales and understand their population genetic structure.
