The group of three researchers leaded by Dr Mirko Tomić is oriented to the investigation and discovery of newly synthesized and natural bioactive compounds with a potency to treat psychiatric disorders. The specific goals of their research are exploration of the effects of these compounds for the treatment of depression and schizoactive disorders. Another direction of their research is towards the investigation and understanding of the roles and importance of the particular nutritional components for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders associated with metabolic dysfunctions.
All research was funded by the Ministry of Science and Education of Serbia, grant No. III 41030. "Biological mechanisms, nutritive status of PUFA and folates: improvement of nutrition in Serbia", headed by Dr Marija Glibetić, from the Institute for Medical Research in Belgrade. This multidisciplinary project assembles over 30 of participants and 6 scientific institutions of the University in Belgrade. Here, Dr Tomić manages a sub-project (PP3) directed to the investigation of the specific medical effects of folates, homocysteine and PUFA on the cultivated cells and experimental animals.
Two members of this group also participates in two other projects funded bythw Ministry of Serbia: Dr Ignjatović, project in chemistry No.172032; dr Tovilović, project in biology No. 173053.
