On April 12th, 2024, the official opening of the exhibition "Amphibians of the Smederevo Region" was held by Dr. Aleksandar Urošević, a senior scientific associate of the Institute for Biological Research Siniša Stanković, and Dr. Gordana Paunović, museum advisor of the Museum in Smederevo.
The exhibition represents a recapitulation of the amphibian research in the Smederevo area, which started more than 75 years ago. It is a result of more than three years of intensive fieldwork on finding and mapping amphibians.
At the opening of the exhibition, the director of the Museum in Smederevo, Tatjana Gačpar, the authors of the exhibition, Dr. Ana Ivanović, full professor of the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade, Dr. Dragana Đurić, Museum Advisor of the Natural History Museum in Belgrade, and Dr. Tanja Vukov, Principal Research Fellow and president of the Scientific Council of the Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković” - national institute of the Republic of Serbia, University of Belgrade. The importance of such exhibitions and museum collections, the endangered status of amphibians in Serbia and globally, as well as the need to value culture, history, art, and also science and research, were highlighted.
The interest in the opening of the exhibition was great, and special attention was attracted by the dioramas - reconstructions of forest and swamp ecosystems with life-sized models of amphibians. The exhibition will be open until June 14, 2024, and until then you will be able to see, and hear thirteen species of amphibians that inhabit the Smederevo region.
