The Center for Genotyping is a unique scientific-research and service platform of the Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković” (IBISS), developed with the aim of applying modern molecular-genetic methods in animal husbandry, with a particular focus on the preservation and improvement of indigenous sheep breeds in Serbia and the Balkan region. The Center was established in response to the real needs of breeders and the scientific community for reliable, precise, and accessible genetic tools, and it is based on the GenOtip platform, which integrates genotyping services with a dedicated database. The primary goal of the Center is to enable precise selection, preservation of genetic diversity, and sustainable use of indigenous and other domestic animal breeds through the application of advanced genetic analyses, while strengthening the link between science, breeders, and the market.
The Center provides sheep genotyping services based on the analysis of 26 carefully selected microsatellite loci, optimized for indigenous Pramenka strains, but fully applicable to all sheep breeds. This approach enables: reliable pedigree verification, kinship control and prevention of inbreeding, identification of genes of interest for selection, establishment and maintenance of a national genetic database.
