Exhibition: How do mealworms biodegrade plastics?

In the Microgallery of the Center for the Promotion of Science (Kralja Petra 46), from September 14 to the end of October 2023, passers-by can experience live a part of the research project conducted by researchers from the Institute for Biological Research "Siniša Stanković".

The use of plastic materials in everyday life is an important part of the global economy and at the same time represents a major burden on the environment. Researchers at IBISS are studying the mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) and its efficiency in converting waste into biomass, which is important for circular economy systems. Various scientific studies point to the mealworm's ability to biodegrade plastic waste, such as polystyrene and polyethylene film.

IBISS researchers are feeding mealworm larvae with wheat bran with the addition of polystyrene and polyethylene film to investigate the various ways these insects can be used to biodegrade plastics. This information contributes to sustainable development and the search for solutions to reduce plastic waste.

Part of this experiment will be on display at Microgallery from Thursday, September 14, until the end of October 2023.

This exhibit was developed within the project Biodegradation of Plastics - Establishing an Incubator Center (Phase I). The public had the opportunity to learn more about this topic at the 65th International Fair of Technics and Technical Achievements in May this year.

The Microgallery is a special exhibition space in the Belgrade Science Club that communicates directly with passers-by and invites the public to discover scientific fields, concepts, phenomena or terms. It is a window into the activities and content of the Center for the Promotion of Science. In five square meters, it presents the scientific area, program or project topic that is currently in focus. It is not just a display window, but a real interactive, popular science, educational exhibit that anyone can view and often try, run or listen to.
